Building a foundation of trust by treating our patients as special individuals is vital to our success. We understand how uneasy some young patients may feel about their dental visits, and our entire team strives to provide a relaxing and positive experience.
Pediatric dentistry (formerly Pedodontics/Paedodontics) primarily focuses on children from birth through adolescence. One of the most important components of pediatric dentistry is child psychology. Pediatric dentists are trained to create a friendly, fun, social atmosphere for visiting children, and always avoid threatening words like "drill," "needle," and "injection." Dental phobias beginning in childhood often continue into adulthood, so it is of paramount importance that children have positive experiences and find their "dental home" as early as possible.
Pediatric dentists fulfill many important functions pertaining to the child’s overall oral health and hygiene. They place particular emphasis on the proper maintenance and care of deciduous (baby) teeth, which are instrumental in facilitating good chewing habits, proper speech production, and also hold space for permanent teeth.
Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet. Prevention also includes regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth.
Nitrous oxide/oxygen is a safe, effective sedative agent used to calm a child's fear of the dental visit and enhance effective communication. It is often called "laughing gas" since it may provide a feeling of giddiness or euphoria. Additionally, nitrous oxide/oxygen works well for children whose gag reflex interferes with dental treatment,
Oral conscious sedation involves the use of sedative medication taken by mouth to help increase cooperation and to reduce anxiety or discomfort associated with dental procedures.
IV (Intravenous) sedation involves the use of sedative medications administered into the blood system by a dentist anesthesiologist. IV sedation induces a state of deep relaxation and a feeling of not being bothered by what is going on.
Sealants protect the grooved and pitted surfaces of the teeth, especially the chewing surfaces of back teeth where most cavities in children are found. Sealants "seal out" food and plaque, this reducing the risk of decay.
Digital radiography provides immediate observation of radiographic images. The digital radiography device can instantly display the image on a computer screen. Digital radiography takes less time and provide 90% less radiation. Sirona/Ortho is proud to provide digital radiography (panoramic, 3D).
